Entry Level Mechanical Engineer

Perform engineering evaluations and analyses, and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Power Plant Mechanical Engineering positions provide design engineering support for Fleet and Prototype Naval Nuclear Propulsion reactor plant mechanical systems.

Duties include but not limited to:
  • Analytical evaluations in support of diagnosing and correcting reactor plant equipment performance issues
  • Design and development of reactor plant mechanical system upgrades
  • Developing and maintaining reactor plant operating procedures
  • Evaluating reactor plant system performance test data
  • Making engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks
  • Maintenance procedures
  • New equipment installations, including mechanical, fluids and heat transfer analysis and engineering evaluations
  • Trouble shooting

Cognizant areas may include but are not limited to:
  • Analyzing
  • Designing
  • Documenting
  • Planning
  • Testing of nuclear, mechanical, structural or electrical components, systems and equipment and facilities

Work may include but not limited to:
  • Analysis of vendor's procedures
  • Chemical or materials evaluations
  • Design reviews
  • Engineering methods
  • Operations support
  • Safety analysis
 
Required Skills *

Associate:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university required.
 
Intermediate:
  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience; or
  • Currently or previously EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or
  • SRE Qualification

Preferred Skills

  • Able to work on an individual assignment(s) as well as being a member of a small team(s)
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 and above on a 4.0 GPA Scale
  • Demonstrated Leadership skills
  • Experience in writing technical reports or engineering evaluations
  • Mechanical System Design Experience
  • Previous co-op, intern, and/or employee of Naval Nuclear Laboratory. This does NOT include subcontractors at these locations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to be trained to learn new skill(s) as needed
